The World Soil Day is an annual observance held on 5 December around the world to highlight the importance of soil on earth. The soil is our basic need for survival of food and energy. It is celebrated at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations headquarters in Rome and the regional offices and through national and local events. This day is also related with another day of the United Nation’s Year of Soil. History of World Soil Day In 2002, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) adopted a resolution adopted a resolution suggesting the 5th of December be the World Soil Day to celebrate the importance of soil and as a critical constituent of the natural system and as an essential contributor to human well-being. The United Nations saw a need to raises awareness about the threats of soil loss, so it made World Soil Day as an official day. Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the structure of the “Global Soil Partnership,” Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has supported the formal stability of World Soil Day as global raising awareness. In June 2013, the FAO Conference endorsed, and in December 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly announced 5th of December as the World Soil Day. In 2015, the International Year of Soils was also declared as to raises more awareness about the enormous role of soil plays in food security. Threats and Importance of Soil The soil is no doubt it is of the most significant parts of the ecosystem who contribute to our food, water, energy, and health and play an important role in reducing the impact of climate change. The soil is made up of organic remains, clay and rock particles, found on the Earth’s surface and it contributes to food, lessen biodiversity loss, and secures energy. However, many problems threatening the soil fertility, in these problems include deforestation, harmful agricultural practices, and pollution. It causes soil degradation and erosion. It is our ignorance about the importance of soil and the level to which we take advantage of all that it offers that have led to a final reduction in its quality the world over. These are entirely the problems at which World Soil Day aims to battle, a few things could be more important to us, the inhabitants of Earth, who could never hope to survive without the land. How is it celebrated? On World Soil Day many Soil scientists and organizations, like the International Union of Soil Sciences, promote the day by social media, YouTube, talk shows and many local events to talk about issues of soil such as soil erosion and preserving the soil. Many of us do not know enough about the earth to know when we are damaging it. So, there are many things we can do regular that can significantly help the soil we live off of remain in good condition. Such as, plant a rain garden which helps in reduced the soil erosion. Also, we can do many things to protect the soil from damaging. What’s Open or Closed on this Day? World Soil Day is an annual observance, not a public holiday. So, all educational institutions and business are open as usual.
