The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is an annual event held on 2 December by the United Nations General Assembly worldwide to raises awareness about the cruelty of modern slavery. It was first celebrated in 1986. History of International Day for the Abolition of Slavery The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery memorializes the approval of the UN Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others on 2 December 1949, by the resolution 317(IV). In 1985, the United Nations report the Working Group on Slavery recommended to proclaimed that World Day for the Abolition of Slavery on 2 December in its all forms. Since 1995 the day is known as the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that 2004 the International Year to Commemorate the efforts against Slavery and its Abolition by resolution 57/195 of 18 December 2002. On November 28, 2006, the assembly nominated the International Day for the Commemoration of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade on March 25, 2007. Besides this, Another day of the United Nations is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, and it is observed on 23 August. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), over 40 million people around the world are victims of modern slavery.
