The International Day for Biological Diversity is an annual Day which is celebrated on 22 May around the world to raises awareness about biodiversity issues and conserving endangered habitats. The United Nations first adopted it. History of International Day for Biological Diversity In 1992, at the United Nations Conference on Environment and advancement the state and government leaders agreed on a strategy for sustainable progress. It is also known as “The Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sustainable progress is one of the most important agreements which is reached during the Earth Summit, and it is the best method to meet the necessity of people all around the world to ensure that the earth remains fine. On 29 December 1993, the Convention on Biological Diversity came into being, and each year from its creation till 2000, International Day for Biological Diversity was celebrated on 29 December. After this, from 2001, it moved on 22 May to celebrate every year, to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of Convention on Biological Diversity at a United Nations conference in Nairobi, Kenya. It is also shifted to this date due to avoid the number of holidays that occur in late December. Every year, the International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated with a particular theme. A theme which is select every year to educates the people of the world on the vast variety of topics that fall under the Food, Water and Health biodiversity, from Climate Change to Forest and Sustainable development. What do People do on this Day? On International Day for Biological Diversity, a wide range of events are organized to raises awareness about the importance of biodiversity in the future. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity organizes many events for the celebration which makes the part of the United Nations Environmental Program, many national governments, and non-governmental organizations. In these activities include Exhibitions, seminars for all people, presentation programs, planting trees and help other plants to prevent from erosion, and showing movies on environmental issues. Biodiversity information is spreading through educational institutes as well as by radio, television, and newspaper. The events of the competition of photography and artwork between people are also organized on this day. Politicians also promote International Day for Biological Diversity by their speeches on local environmental problems. Is it a Public Holiday? The International Day for Biological Diversity is an annual observance and not a public holiday. Public life is not affected by this day. Symbol of this Day The symbol of International Day for Biological Diversity is an image of shrub or a branch with three green leaves. Every year a piece of artwork is used to reflect the theme.
