International Literacy Day is an annual day which is celebrated on 8th September around the world to enhance people’s awareness about the issues of literacy in the world. History of International Literacy Day On October 26, 1966, at the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference, the International Literacy Day was proclaimed by the UNESCO. It was first celebrated in 1967. According to the UNESCO research, about 775 million adults need minimum literacy skills, one in five adults of them are still not literate, and two-thirds of them are women. Over 70 million children are out-of-school, and many more faces irregularly or leave out. There are about four billion literate people in the world and because of this fact, International Literacy Day is celebrated. Every year, people celebrated International Literacy Day with a specific theme, like as the celebration theme of 2007-08 was “Literacy and Health”, 2009-10 was “Literacy and Empowerment”, and 2011-12 was “Literacy and Peace”. Every year On International Literacy Day, UNESCO reminds the international community about the status of literacy and mature learning worldly. How People celebrated this day? International Literacy Day is celebrated in countries all around the world to enhances people’s awareness about literacy problems. Many activities and events are organized on this day. In these activities include literacy day projects which are regard to technology and literature, and educational activities, which are encouraged by many organizations including reading associations. Newspaper, news reports, TV and radio also spread awareness about low literacy levels. The purpose of this day is to point out the importance of literacy to individuals, communities, and societies. The UNESCO and its partners promote this day to mark the importance of literacy for healthy societies, with a strong significance on pandemic and contagious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.
