The International Day of Families is an annual celebration held on 15th May around the world to promote the importance of families and raises awareness about the issues relating to families and increase knowledge of the social, economic and population progression that impacts on families. History of International Day of Families In 1993, the United Nation General Assembly was proclaimed that 15th May is the International Day of Families with the resolution (A/RES/47/237). It is due to promote awareness the importance of families that are attached to the international community, and to changing social and economic structure which are still affected to the structure and stability of families in many regions of the world. On May 15, the International Day of Families is an opportunity to think about the work started in 1993 and to celebrate the importance of families, people, cultures, and societies all over the world. This day aims to reflect the importance of families attachment and relationships. Every year has a specific theme to celebrate and promote this day. From 1994, the International Day of Families is celebrated every year all around the world. What do People do on this Day? On International Day of Families, a variety of events are organized at local, national and international levels. In these events include workshops, seminars, Public officials meetings, exhibitions, conferences, and annual theme discussion events. Besides these, in educational institutes, family theme lectures are delivered to enhance their knowledge. The United Nations launches many campaigns for public policies to stabilize and support family units. Radio, television program, newspaper articles and as well as cultural programs are also promoting the International Day of Families. In some countries, toolkits are created for people to help them organize celebrations aimed at a specific part of the population, such as school children or adults. While this day has now become annual observance which is celebrated by many communities, cultures, and people are around the world. Is it a Public Holiday? The United Nations International Day of Families is an annual celebration and not a public Holiday. Businesses and educational institutes are opened as usual. Public life is not affected by this day. It shows that families are the center of society and provide a stable and supportive home for all people.
