International Children’s Day is an observance which is held on 1st June annually in some countries but not all around the world. It is a special day Celebrated as a reminder for the world problems that have a direct or indirect influence on the prosperity and welfare of children around the world. History of International Children’s Day The International Children’s Day was first celebrated in 1925, when representatives from different countries met in Geneva, Switzerland to assemble the first “World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children.” After the conference, some governments around the world nominated a day as Children’s Day to highlight children’s issues. International Children’s Day is similar to the Universal Children’s Day which started on 20 November 1954 by the United Nations but International Children’s Day was officially started on 1st June 1950 by the League of Nations. However, both days are celebrated to promote the welfare and Rights for the children and raised people’s awareness about the issues which are children faced every day. There was no particular date selected to celebrate Children’s Day, so countries started used that date which is most relevant to their culture. World Conference for the Well-being of Children In World Conference for the Well-being of Children in 1st June 1925, it draws public attention to the problems which are effects children. For the Rights of the Children, the following points were recognized in the Conference. • The child must be given the means necessary for its healthy development, both materially and spiritually. • The child must be the first to given comfort in times of distress. • The child must be put in a position to earn money and must save against every form of exploitation. • The child who is hungry must be fed; the child who is sick must be treated; the child who is poor must be helped; the orphan and the waif must be sheltered and succored How people celebrated Children’s Day? On International Children’s Day, many events and activities are organized to raises awareness about the issues affecting children and promote the rights and welfare for Children. Speech programs and conferences are held to promote the rights of the Children. In educational institutes, this day themes lectures are delivered to enhance their knowledge. Governments and non-governmental organizations work together to fulfilling children’s needs and overcoming problems. Is it a Public Holiday? The International Children’s Day is an annual observance and not a public holiday. All educational institutions and businesses are open as usual. Public life is not affected by this day. From the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the global death rate for children under five years old has remained in half.
